Preservers of ethnic cultural heritage

ĐBP - Artisans play a crucial role in in restoring, preserving, and promoting traditional cultural heritage of ethnic minority communities. Over the years, artisans in Điện Biên Province have taken the lead in guiding residents to preserve their cultural identity.

Artisan Giàng Thị Mảy showcases traditional Mông embroidery products to tourists at the 2024 Bauhinia Flower Festival.

In Tủa Chùa district, the Mông ethnic minority group’s traditional embroidery has a long history. Mrs. Mảy learned the craft from a young age and mastered it by 16.

In recent years, she has participated in various events such as the Bauhinia Flower Festival, the Ethnic Culture Day, and the traditional embroidery and bee wax painting demonstration of the Mông Hoa ethnic minority group in Hanoi. These events not only promoted the ethnic minority group’s handicrafts but also provided opportunities for artisans to exchange cultural experiences and inspire young generations.

Mr. Quàng Văn Cá, a Khơ Mú ethnic artisan from Mường Ảng District, is dedicated to preserving his community’s cultural heritage. Mr. Cá recalled that as a child, he attended festivals with his family members and observed the rituals performed by shamans. He later practiced these rituals with friends, and over time, he committed to memory the traditional ceremonies, songs, and dances of the Khơ Mú people.

Artisan Quàng Văn Cá performs on traditional Khơ Mú musical instruments.

In 2022, Mr. Cá was awarded the title of “Outstanding Artisan” by the State President for his contribution to preserving local intangible cultural heritage.

The 19 ethnic minority groups weave a rich cultural tapestry in Điện Biên, characterized by a diverse array of cultural heritage forms. Over the past time, artisans have played a vital role in preserving and promoting cultural identities of these ethnic minority groups for future generations.
